Stokomo

Ultra-consistent Stokomo put in tough performance to grab victory at Balaklava on Wednesday, April 1.

The five-year-old’s neck win in the BTR Excavations Class Two Handicap (1400m) was his second since joining Angaston Park trainers Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor.

The win was a Balaklava double for the trainers as they had won earlier in the day with promising three-year-old filly Thundara.

Stokomo has picked in excess of $70,000 in stakemoney since joining Aaron Bain Racing with two wins, five seconds and a third from 12 starts, never finishing further back than fifth.

At Balaklava, Stokomo ($2.15) responded to hard riding by Connor Murtagh to hit the front late to score by a neck from Holder Maid ($31) with Tofino ($4.60), 2-1/4 lengths away third.

The gelding went forward early to try and find the front, but the runner-up was keen to maintain the front, so Murtagh opted to sit second.

Holder Maid kept running in the home straight giving the ABR runner something to chase with a big weight, but he responded to claim the win.

Winning trainer Ned Taylor said Stokomo had done a great job with his big weight of 61.5kg.

“It was a good performance,” Taylor said.

“They went hard early, and is customary, he wanted to get on with it.

“To his credit, with the big weight, he was game late.

“He maintained a gallop and Connor (Murtagh) put a lot of work into him and rode him well, nice and strong late.

“It was good to see him get his nose out for the win.”

Winning jockey Connor Murtagh was full of praise for Stokomo.

“It was a really good win,” Murtagh said.

“We went a very strong tempo which seemed to suit him.

“I left him in a rhythm where he was comfortable.

“This track suits him with the big, long straight helps him get motoring.

“He did show a great attitude up the straight. He wanted to lay in behind (the leader) but once I got him out he responded well.

“With that big weight it was a nice performance.”
