The long trip from Gawler to Halidon in South Australia’s Mallee area was worthwhile for Aaron Bain Racing when Mrs Penny Cracker was able to break her maiden status.
A heavily backed $1.6 favourite, Mrs Penny Cracker was beautifully ridden by Taylah Jonstone to finish best and grab a three-quarter length victory in the Murray Pioneer, Radio 801-5RM, Radio 5MU-PowerFM Maiden (1380m).
Johnstone had the five-year-old mare away nicely but had to settle in fifth spot with several other runners keen to put tempo into the race.
She brought the mare three wide approaching the home but didn’t ask her to sprint until the field turned for home.
The leader, Oldpop ($7) gave a kick, but Mrs Penny Cracker wore her down to grab victory. Third-placed Prince Lucifer ($3.60) was 4-3/4 lengths away.
Today was the fourth’s run of the winner for trainers Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor and she has improved each time.
Trainer Aaron Bain said Mrs Penny Cracker deserved her maiden victory.
“It was nice to finally break her maiden,” Bain said.
“It was her fourth run for us and good to see her break through.
“I was a little bit worried around the 800 (metres), but she picked up the bridle and won really well, I loved her last 100 metres.
“It was a warm day, and the track was firm so we will see how she pulls up before planning her next run.
“Hopefully there is another win around the corner.”
Winning jockey Taylah Johnston said Mrs Penny Cracker had won nicely.
“It was a good win today,” Johnstone said.
“She was a little bit tardy away today, but we were still able to end up in a lovely spot.
“The leaders went along at a decent clip, and she was on and off the bridle during the race.
“I pulled her out at the 600 (metres) and really got into her and worked around the bend.
“She was not going to get beaten after that, working into her gears nicely and found the line quite well.
“It was a nice win.”
