Weekend Review

What a fabulous weekend for Aaron Bain Racing.

On Saturday, quality thoroughbred mare BELLEZZE was brilliant in securing her first win at Morphettville Parks.

With her Racing Rewards bonus, BELLEZZE picked up $48,420 in taking out the Sportsbet Green Pick Maiden (1250m) for trainers Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor and jockey Jason Holder.

Switching codes, ABR’s standardbred colt LETSSTARTINHEAVEN raced away for an easy 14 metre win in the Logical Staffing Solutions Tatlow Stakes (2240m) for two-year-old colts & geldings at Melton.

Trained by Emma Stewart and driven by Jason Lee, the colt rated a smart 1:56.6.

LETSSTARTINHEAVEN landed in the one out one back trail from gate six before Lee released the reins with 600 metres to travel and the son of Rock N Roll Heaven quickly put a gap on his rivals.

ABR had hoped for more feature success in Hobart on Sunday, but unfortunately the meeting was called off because of wet weather before the Tasmanian Oaks and Derby could be run. The good news was the races were transferred to Tuesday.

BEACH DIAMOND stamped her class with an all-the-way win in the Listed $40,000 Cavalor Equicare Tasmanian Oaks (2090m).

Driven by Allan McDonough for trainer Emma Stewart, BEACH DIAMOND ($1.65 fav) withstood a challenge from stablemate Let It Roll ($2.10) to win by 7-1/2 metres with third-placed The Bride ($21), 22 metres away third.

The ABR filly recorded four sub-30 second quarters for an overall mile rate of 1:56.5.

Then, stablemate CAPTAIN PERFECT repeated the effort with an all-the-way victory in the Listed $40,000 Cavalor Equicare Tasmanian Derby (2579m).

Also trained by Emma Stewart and driven by Allan McDonough, CAPTAIN PERFECT, a renowned lazy trackworker, had to be shaken up over the last 600 metres being in front by himself, but drew clear for an easy win.

The colt, the unbackable $1.16 favourite, won by 14 metres from Coniston ($5) with Zeus Immortal ($16), 12-1/2 metres away third.

The Captain rated a smart 2:00.1 with three sub30 second quarters finishing off the staying test with an impressive 28 second quarter.

To complete an ABR Tuesday hat-trick, DREAMALITTLEDREAM led throughout in the Ladbrokes Bet Ticker Pace (1800m) at Globe Derby Park confidently driven by Wayne Hill for trainer Peter Bain.

It is Balaklava Cup day on Wednesday, one of the special days of SA racing.

ABR heads to the track with two runners.

UTAH will have its first run for ABR in race two, the Clare Valley Toyota Maiden (1600m) at 12.20pm SA time.

The four-year-old has drawn barrier eight in a field of 12. There has already been a scratching, so he comes into gate 7.

Star jockey Jason Holder will take the ride.

UTAH has had two trials for ABR at Murray Bridge and Strathalbyn and Holder was aboard both times.

The gelding has shown talent over middle distances in Victoria and trainers Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor hope he can step up on debut for the stable.

LITTLEBOURKESTREET is ABR’s other runner in race 8, the TQCSI Benchmark 68 Handicap (1200m) at 3.50pm SA time – the race before the Cup.

The four-year-old mare has drawn barrier one in an acceptance of 12 and there has already been one scratching.

She has 54.4kg which is below Jason Holder’s weight and ABR has booked visiting Victorian jockey Craig “Froggy” Newitt.

LITTLEBOURKESTREET has run well in all four runs for ABR, the most recent a third at Morphettville Parks on August 16.

From her draw, the mare should obtain a good run and be competitive.

Busy weekend ahead for ABR with runners at Bordertown on Friday and Morphettville on Saturday.

Weekend star

Bellezze indicated she is a mare of quality with a sensational win in the Sportsbet Green Tick Maiden (1250m) at Morphettville Parks.

Racing without luck earlier in the preparation, Bellezze, trained by Aaron Bain & Ned Taylor, was given a superb ride by Jason Holder to race away for an impressive victory.

Caught up between runners early in the home straight, Holder angled the four-year-old mare between runners to dash through for first place.

Bellezze ($4.80) put two lengths on her rivals at the finish with Machinegun Mike ($5.50), second, a neck in front of It’s Only Magic ($26).

Trainer Aaron Bain said Bellezze was a mare which could continue to improve.

“She has been drawing really poorly this preparation,” Bain said.

“The blinkers were on today to help her get through that flat spot she has been finding about the 400-metre mark.

“Today, she was given an absolute peach by Stubby (Jason Holder), one ride for us for one win.

“He got the gap at the 200m, and she exploded.

“It was really good to see. She has always shown of promise and for her to do that and win a metro maiden with the Racing Rewards attached is great for the owners and her breed Paul Kristoris.

“Paul offered for a sale as a yearling, and we bought her for $40,000. He came around and asked to retain a share and we were happy to oblige.

“He is a great guy to train for, with his wife Suzy, he is a great supporter of racing in South Australia.

“It was fantastic to win his colours, and I believe Bellezze is only going to get better as she gets out over further.

“There has been a lot of owners who came on board when we purchased her as a yearling.

“I think she can go on for them and still has a few runs let in this campaign.

“Bellezze had her knees cleaned out at the end of her last preparation and had a small chip removed. She has done a great job to come back from that.”

Winning jockey Jason Holder said Bellezze was continuing to improve.

“This is what I love about this sport, making people happy,” Holder said.

“Today, the horse went really well and there were a lot of happy owners.

“Ned (Taylor) is great. He is always looking for advice and makes his own decisions, but I thought to keep her at the 1250 metres adding blinkers would be a good move.

“It worked out really well.

“It was a great training performance; she is nice and fit and very well prepared.

“I had really nice cover during the early stages, but I thought I might have missed the boat when another runner went around me.

To the mare’s credit, when the gaps opened she went through and was too good.

“She was good the other day, and I thought she was better today.
