Navy Gold

Navy Gold gave trainers Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor their most successful training day when he finished best to win at Murray Bridge on Saturday, March 8.

The victory in the Thomas Farms Handicap (1400m) gave the co-trainers their first metropolitan training treble following earlier wins by Shady Thinker and Bakeel.

Navy Gold ($8) finished strongly to win by a head from The Golden Fist ($3.50 fav) with Wild Winner ($3.90), 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Jockey Manoel Nunes had the four-year-old away nicely and settled midfield.

Turning for home Navy Gold looked to have plenty to offer but had a bit of trouble getting into the clear.

Once Nunes found an opening, the gelding lengthened grabbing the lead in the shadows of the post.

Trainer Aaron Bain was amazed by the partnership’s first metropolitan treble.

“Wow. What just happened?, Bain said.

“Unbelievable. I came hoping for one, two would be lovely but three, that is special.

“Hopefully, our training partnership is here in a big way.

“We moved into Angaston Park seven months ago and we are starting to see the fruits bear now.

“We’ve developed a good little routine with it.

“Angaston for the groundwork then using Gawler for their last gallop on the Tuesday, the flat gallop sharpens them up and the horses have never raced sharper.

“Navy Gold has won races at benchmark 56 level, but we have always said he was entitled to win a Saturday race and today, he has done that.”

Winning jockey Manoel Nunes said Navy Gold appreciated the open spaces of Murray Bridge.

“The stable is hot and I’m glad to jump onto the right horse,” Nunes said.

“He should have won here two starts back, I had no luck.

“Today, he had a good barrier, but the pace was a bit slow, and he got a bit keen down the back straight.

“I had a bit of trouble getting clear around the home turn but when he got clear he came on well.

“He is a bit tricky to ride because when I used my whip in the right he wanted to hang in, but when I switched to the left he went again, it was a good win.
